Designing Systems, Not Screens

Modern studio workspace

Screens Are Only the Surface

It is tempting to judge design by the screens you can see. But a screen is just a snapshot of a much larger set of rules. Change the content, the device or the language, and a screen designed in isolation tends to break.

Systems thinking asks a different question. Not what should this screen look like, but what rules would let any screen assemble itself correctly. Spacing, type scale, colour roles and components all become shared parts rather than one off decisions.

Why Systems Scale

When a product grows, the team grows with it. A well defined system lets new people ship work that still feels like one product. That is the real return on designing systems instead of screens.
